The Americanah scarf is a 100% cotton staple piece of the Portuguese influenced and South Africa based brand “Romaria”. Inspired by the novel “Americanah” by nigerian writer and feminist Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, illustrator Mariana Lancastre has collaborated with Romaria in developing a bold graphic pattern for the scarf.
As the name suggests, the scarf can remind us of the new ways of doing things we acquire when stepping into new territories. This piece holds a strong influence of the spirit of pilgrimage and interconnectedness that resides in Romaria’s values.
Romaria focuses on mastering the craft of knitting by means of repetition. The Jacquard machine in which the scarf has been knitted is a device fitted to a loom allowing a simplification of the process of manufacturing textiles and making ways for intricate patterns to come to life.
